New Century Hall: A True Manchester Gem
We’re incredibly spoiled for choice when it comes to music here in Manchester and, no doubt, you already know that the city is famous all over the world for its musical roots, home to some of the biggest artist names ever, new and old alike, including everyone from The Stone Roses, Oasis and Joy Division to James, The Fall, The Smiths, The Happy Mondays, The Blossoms… we could go on, but we’d be here all day!
With such talent comes amazing venues and you’ll never find yourself short of somewhere to go when you come to stay in Manchester… but if you’re looking for one of the true iconic stages in the city to check out, you’ve got to put New Century Hall at the top of the list.
The Grade-II listed building was designed by British architect Gordon Tait (also responsible for Manchester’s CIS Tower) for the Co-operative Insurance Society, and had a significant role to play in the development of the city’s musical heritage.
Both Jimi Hendrix and Jerry Lee Lewis have played there, as have more local stars like The Kinks, The Hollies and Procol Harum, with the musical heritage alone reason to pay it a visit.
Despite its rich and illustrious musical history, the hall fell into disuse for years, with just a smattering of gigs played here and there… but in 2022 change was afoot and New Century Hall was relaunched as part of the Noma district development.
Now it’s home to the Access Creative College where students can gain degree-level qualifications in gaming and music, as well as an amazing food hall with a very well-stocked bar and street vendor kitchen that caters for all tastes. You won’t go hungry here!
Upstairs, the events space has been fully restored with beautiful vintage wood panelling, a stunning illuminated ceiling and a sprung dance floor… so you know you’re in for a top night, whoever you go to see.
