Exploring Ancoats: Our Top Picks
While the Northern Quarter in Manchester has long been considered the go-to hotspot for anyone staying in the city, there’s a relative newcomer hot on its heels who’s keen to claim the crown as the place to be seen – and that’s Ancoats!
This part of the city was laid out towards the end of the 18th century, with the Rochdale Canal opening in 1804, which spurred on the construction of local mills by making cargo transport more convenient. The industrialists saw the benefit of this and started mill building in earnest and you can still see a lot of the beautiful red brick buildings standing today.
The district hit a bit of a slump in the 30s when the cotton industry started to wane, which saw people relocate to Manchester suburbs like Wythenshawe, snuffing out the Ancoats star for quite some time.
Regeneration projects in recent years, however, have seen it start to curry favour once again and now people are clamouring to call it home… and it’s not hard to see why.
If you’re new to the city and aren’t sure where to start with your Ancoats adventure, here are just three of our top picks to put at the top of your must-do list. Enjoy!
New Islington Marina
There’s nothing like a stroll around the local marina, a waterside wharf that’s home to lots of lovely canal boats and lamentations of swans to be found everywhere as you go… perfect for photo opportunities! You’ll also find plenty of options for refreshments, including the renowned Pollen bakery and Cask Bar, both of which are right on the edge of the canal.
The Hip Hop Chip Shop
If it’s food you’re after, look no further than the Hip Hop Chip Shop, which is as famous for its live music events as it is for its delicious take on classic fish dishes.
Food-wise, expect fish and chips (naturally), but also halloumi, vegan fish, sausages, butties and lots more. The next upcoming event is the vinyl all dayer and record fair on September 29th – so get on down if you’re in town!
Cutting Room Square
In the heart of Ancoats, you’ll find Cutting Room Square, a pedestrianised section of the district that’s chock-full of trees, shrubbery and planters, with plenty of space to sit and soak up the atmosphere. You’re surrounded by places to eat and drink, so you could easily while away the whole day without moving too far. It’s the perfect place for dog spotting, as well!
